説明 | Unity, Oregon -- Ranchers Mark and Patti Bennett are conservation-minded land managers who desire as much diversity as possible on their rangeland. They have removed more than 7,000 acres of invasive juniper on the ranch, which is good for sage grouse habitat, water infiltration, and soil health. Junipers are thirsty trees. They can suck up to 55 gallons of water per day from the soil. Removing them has kept more water in the ground to feed natural springs that had once gone dry. The Bennetts have installed wildlife friendly fencing with flags that help reduce bird collisions. They do range monitoring to collect data on what's growing on the range and they carefully adjust their grazing strategy based on the monitoring. They are working with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to secure the entire 9,000 acre ranch into a permanent easement that would keep it in agriculture forever and protect it from development. The Bennetts hosted a group of natural resource professionals on a soil health-focused tour May 14, 2019. NRCS photo by Tracy Robillard. |
