説明 | This is a narrow piece of land that projects into the Solent River near Southampton, on the South coast of England. It has commanded and controlled entry and exit from the very busy port of Southampton and the waterway. Seen in my photo are Calshot Castle (built by King Henry VIII in 1540), an RNLI lifeboat station, a National Coastwatch station - the 112 ft (34 m) tower which is only accessible by climbing internal ladders, several slipways, a former Royal Navy and Royal Air Force flying boat station - now the Sunderland Hangar, an Activities Centre .In the distance we see the Isle of Wight. If you look closely, above the sailboat and just over the tree line we see the top of the towers of Osborne House. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought the Osborne estate in 1845, where they created their private home away from court life. Victoria used Osborne for over 50 years, entertaining foreign royalty and visiting ministers, finding solace there after Albert’s death in 1861. In 1929 and 1931, the waters near Calshot were the venue for the Schneider Trophy, an international air race for seaplanes that produced the forerunner to the legendary Spitfire of WW2 fame. It's a popular place for people to go and watch the many different ships that pass by, such as general cargo, oil tankers, ferries, cruise ships and pleasure craft - to name just a few. |
