説明This is a photograph from the second annual Royal Greenway Run 5KM and 10KM races which were held on the Royal Canal Greenway between The Hill-of-Down and Longwood Dock in Killyon, Clonard, County Meath, Ireland on Wednesday 29th May 2019 at 19:30. While this is the first running of this particular race configuration tonights race builds upon a well established local 5KM road race which has been held here in Killyon for the previous four years. The races tonight are organised as an ongoing fundraiser for the local primary school. In many ways this is a unique race. With the exception of a road crossing at Blackshade and the last 200 meters of both races both routes are entirely on the Royal Canal Greenway route in this beautiful part of south Co. Meath. The greenway is the result of an initiative to allow non-motorised travel (bike, hiking, etc) right along the banks of the Royal Canal from Dublin city center to the heart of the Midlands in County Longford. This has seen the Canal bank transformed and the surface provided for the participants this evening is one of perfect flat, smooth road earning it a label of one of the flattest races in Ireland. The Canal bank was always a well known walking spot for locals but the recent redevelopment into a Greenway has seen this part of Co. Meath opened to anyone interested in a stroll or bike along the Canal. Both races start in the same place (right opposite Moran's Pub on the Canal at Hill-of-Down) and then travel Eastwards to Blackshade bridge. The 5KM race then turns around and returns to Moran's for the finish line. The 10KM race continues onwards to the next set of bridges at Longwood Dock. The race crosses the River Boyne via the mighty Longwood Aquaduct bridge and turns around at the beautiful restored boathouse at Longwood Dock. Two water stops were provided for the races and there were plenty of supportive and helpful marshalls/stewards on the route. Today's weather was a little different to 2018. A dull and overcast evening seen earlier rain clearing. However, a very strong westerly wind meant that when both races turned at their respective turn points runners had to face into a headwind for the return part of the race. Yet with temperatures around 15C the evening was pleasant for racing in this wonderful unique setting of one of Ireland's most historic and beautiful inland waterways. Event management and electronic timing was provided by Kildare-based company Popup Races. The results are available on www.popupraces.ie
