| 説明 | Horse show behind the Front Line during World War I. A sturdy hunter-type horse stands facing to the left. His rider is in full military attire and sits tall and proud on his horse. The judge stands at the back of the horse and is inspecting its tail. He is holding a piece of paper. The horse appears in excellent condition; its coat is shining and its hooves are well polished. Until the Second World War, horses and mules were used heavily in war, many thousands died in the 1914-18 war. Horse shows like this gave an opportunity for the cavalrymen to show off their best animals, who were indeed prized, and provided a diversion from the horror of the Front. Modern day equestrian competitions grew out of the need for cavalry training, because a fit and obedient horse is essential in combat.[Original reads .'FROM THE WESTERN FRONT.
