説明 | Engineers moving piles for a bridge, France, during World War I. This is one of a series of photographs showing different processes in the construction of a railway bridge by Royal Engineers. It shows a group of engineers using long-handled two-pronged hooks to move a large baulk of timber which will form one of the vertical piles of the new bridge. The maintenance and improvement of railway networks was vital during the war, in order to move men, ammunition and other supplies as quickly as possible.[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE.
