| 説明 | Indian cavalry, Western Front, during World War I. This is one of a number of photographs showing the Indian cavalry who fought with the Allies. In the autumn of 1914, the urgent need for trained soldiers led to the enlistment of both infantry and cavalry from the Indian Army. The motives of the men concerned appear to have ranged between a need for money and an Imperial ideal of loyalty to the king.This particular photograph must have been taken prior to March 1918, when the two Indian cavalry divisions, which had remained in Europe after the withdrawal of the Indian infantry in 1915, were sent to Palestine.
