説明 | One of the great cities of the Roman world, Apamea in Syria, was founded by Seleucus I in 300 BCE. A Belgian archaeological mission has been excavating the site since the 1930s. Under a bilateral agreement with the Syrian government, some of the objects recovered were sent to Brussels. This monumental mosaic adorned a reception room in a building which can be identified as the palace of the governor of the province of Syria Secunda. Against a background of white tesserae arranged fanwise, hunting scenes symbolizing the patron's courage and wealth are depicted in five successive levels. The mosaicist rendered a sense of depth with the swirling movement of the tesserae, colour shading and depiction of cast shadows. Trees and shrubbery evoke the landscape. The geometric borders surrounding the central scene recall carpets.www.kmkg-mrah.be/great-hunt-mosaic |
