説明 | This is an overview of the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon in the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. As we arrived at the parking lot, the clouds cast a pattern of lights and shadows on the landscape, giving the canyon a wonderful depth. The canyon was probably formed by catastrophic glacial flows from Vatnajökull only a few thousand years ago. It is 25 km long and in some places 100 m deep. The many waterfalls - Selfoss, Dettifoss, Hafragilsfoss - characterize a geologically young landscape in which the water has not yet leveled the river valleys. The river is called Jökulsá á Fjöllum, the name meaning "glacial river in the mountains". It is the second longest river in Iceland (the longest being the Þjórsá in the south) and it flows from the Vatnajökull glacier to the north into the Greenland Sea. |
