| 説明 | Winter solstice morning on the Wild and Scenic John Day River, as it winds through state and BLM-administered lands near Cottonwood Canyon, Dec. 21, 2018, by Greg Shine, BLM.The Wild and Scenic John Day River is the longest free-flowing river without dams in Oregon. It’s also one of the longest in the United States. Elevations range from 265 feet at the confluence with the Columbia River to over 9,000 feet at the headwaters in the Strawberry Mountain Range.In 1988, Congress designated 148 miles of the main John Day as well as 101 miles of the north and south forks as National Wild and Scenic Rivers. The John Day offers diverse geology with columnar basalt monoliths, towering buttes and the eroded red & green soils of ancient fossil-rich ecosystems.At Cottonwood Canyon, the BLM and Oregon State Parks are working together to create a seamless experience for visitors to Oregon’s newest state park.Cottonwood Canyon State Park straddles 16 miles of the lower John Day River, where Highway 206 crosses the river between Gilliam and Sherman Counties. The 8,000-acre park boasts amazing, rugged canyons, spectacular views and a primitive experience for guests. The park will remain generally undeveloped with miles of trails, primitive campgrounds, cabins, a day use area, a Welcome Center, restrooms and self-guided interpretive walks around the old ranch buildings.
