説明 | This is my homemade mystery box. It has two meanings. First, it is a bit of a homage to one of my favorite TED talks by J.J. Abrams called "Mystery Box". It's an entertaining talk but also provides some valuable insights into the importance of mysteries in our lives, and how they drive us to pursue new ideas. The other meaning is related to learning and the larger purpose of TED talks. I believe they are about exposing us to new mysteries that we may want to explore further, and when we force ourselves to explore them we learn during the process of discovery. That was one of the original reasons for TED according to Richard Saul Wurman, who started the TED conference back in 1984. He wanted to bring together esoteric speakers on a wide range of subjects to expose himself and others to new mysteries and new ideas. If we can look at our lives and the world around ourselves as a series of mysteries (as Abrams said "Mystery boxes are everywhere"), we will all spend more time on learning and discovery, and less time contemplating discontent with our lives and the world. In other words - exploring mysteries can make the world a better place --- StevenB |
