説明 | Wow, that's quite a lot of bodies awaiting cremation! Each of those parasols you see in the distance is actually a bier holding a coffin. The mass cremation ceremonies are held every five years at the cremation temple adjoining the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud, Bali for the people of the adjoining Padangtegal village. Hindus cremate their dead, but here the dead are buried temporarily usually for want of funds. Once the funds are in place, the body is exhumed and ngaben (the cremation ceremony) can begin. This takes place at the cremation temple (pura prajapati), which lies adjacent to one of the temples in the Sacred Monkey Forest. There is in fact a cemetery adjoining the park where these bodies are buried temporarily. Since the ceremony is held once in five years, you can only guess that some bodies have to wait that long till what remains of the body is exhumed and cremated. The excavated corpses are placed in a bull-shaped sarcophagus/ bier atop a cremation tower and burned, while sacrifices are made to the gods and intricate barong dances are performed. This is believed to release the spirit from the body, letting it take up residence in the upper world. There is a final seaside ritual known as mamukur which is designed to release the spirit completely, allowing it to then reincarnate in the body of a newborn descendant; however, most Balinese are not able to fulfill this final step.
