説明 | Their first singles after The Beatles. Interesting to see how they saw themselves (or wanted to be seen): John the one-man revolutionary army; George contemplating holier things; Paul absorbed in silly love songs to Linda; and Ringo in a cowboy hat and leather trousers, struggling with them darn first position chords.Sobering, though, to think that, by this time, they had all barely turned 30.Power To The People is the worst of the four by a long way - a tub-thumping cacophony, right on. Another Day is an early example of the catchy but aimless ditties McCartney has been dishing up ever since (Eleanor Rigby it definitely ain't). Only My Sweet Lord is truly great, but Ringo's song is a lot of fun, and the B-Side, Early 1970, takes a gentle swipe at each of the other three.(McCartney left the Beatles in April 1970, just as Let It Be and his own McCartney album were released, and solo albums (but no singles) from each of the others followed between September and December 1970. The singles, above, were all released early in 1971: George's in January; Paul's in February; John's in March; Ringo's in April. (Conspiracy theory, anyone?!) Another Day never had a picture bag in the UK: this copy is Italian, but the artwork is the same as for the UK trade ads. I was four.) |
