説明 | Remains of the Royal Suspension Chain Pier [Wikipedia] - more than a century old - exposed in the silt [Google map] at low tide in Brighton, East Sussex. The piles are variously reported as being Cast Iron or Petrified Timber. The site is directly opposite New Steine Square / Gardens.Brighton had no harbour, but when sea travel was significantly faster than land travel (by horse), the pier was an optimum departure / embarkation point for Londoners traveling to France. The pier was destroyed by a storm in 1896.See also the "Brighton Chain Pier and Remains" GalleryMore Chain Pier links:Chain Pier Pictures [My Brighton and Hove] including splendid computer generated re-creationsChain Pier History [My Brighton and Hove]www.thisbrighton.co.uk/culturepiers.htmPicture PostcardPhotographers on the Pier from Brighton Photographers 1841-1910lomokev's clearer vision on flickr |
