| 説明 | I was raised Catholic, and was an alter boy from the age of eight to fifteen. Having participated in so many masses over all those years, I had heard and/or read most of the bible. But it was always in pieces - a reading here, a reading there.Oddly enough, it wasn't until I joined the Army at nineteen that I actually read the New Testament cover to cover. It was a strange experience putting all the pieces into a flowing narrative. I knew where they belonged, but it was the steady rhythm of the text that made the difference, without the interpretation of the priest, or the intervening days. The only books we were allowed to have in Basic Training were our "Smart Book" which was the trainee manual, or a "religious text". There were boxes of these little Gideon's Bibles everywhere, so I had three or four by the end of my training. They were small enough you could tuck them in your coat pocket and not think about them until you had some down time and nothing to do. I still have a few of them laying around the house. |
