説明 | Interior of Kombi showing the RAAF Base Darwin extension numbers written in under the glasshouse. This VW Kombi was modified for the RAAF as a mobile control tower in the sixties. It sat in the AHSNT workshop yard for many years and was slowly rusting away due to broken windows and perished door seals allowing the rain in during the tropical wet season. In 2001 AHSNT member Lt Andre Hummel an Australian Army pilot asked if he could rebuild the vehicle for his own personal use. Having obtained permission Lt Hummel worked on the Kombi for the next eighteen months and completed the restoration by the end of 2002. Andre used the Kombi for his own personal use on the proviso that he would give the Society first option to purchase the vehicle if he had no longer use for it. In later years the Kombi was offered back to the Society at a fair price but the then committee declined the purchase. This vehicle is now used as a takeaway outlet in Byron Bay. |
