説明Here I am back at my mini reviews of 2018! I just wanted to share with you guys my thoughts on a couple other films that I watched this month. A few you will definitely see on my end of the year Top 20 list in the coming days! Let's get to it!Green Book -This is exactly the kind of film I needed to watch right after I heard Netflix canceled Daredevil... It still hurts... Anyways, the foundation of why Green Book works so well is the performances. I completely fall behind the hype of Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen getting acting nominations come Oscar season. I'd even say Ali specifically is is pretty clear for a win, his performance blew me away! I forgot how well he could play the piano, it's been awhile since I last saw him jamming out on that keyboard during Luke Cage season 1. Why I can't say this film is perfect is because it takes a bit for this movie to really take off. I'd say the first act's a little generic and slow, but once it hits that KFC scene that's in the trailer, the film soars. The chemistry of Ali and Mortensen's characters is so golden and watching the ups and downs of their relationship really worked for me. The film makes some pretty insightful points about race. So many films have tackled prejudice and it's so amazing to see that each one is so different than the last, this is what cinema is all about! Overall, I had a fantastic night watching this film with my Film Studies boys and I'll definitely be keeping this film in mind come Oscar season, I hope the academy does the same.Score: 8/10Roma -www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNMO5xuvrgABut seriously though, that's fucking life right there. I'm speechless. I feel like Cuarón just picked me up and thrust me over his shoulder like a sac of potatoes and took me on one of the most sublime yet human experiences one can have. I laughed, I got frustrated, I was devastated, and I was just blown away. He really didn't pull any punches in this one. Seeing this in the Dolby theater at Dodge with a packed audience made it all the more better. Do yourself a favor and watch this on the biggest screen you can when it comes to Netflix this Friday. I literally have nothing bad to say about this film. It may not be my personal favorite film of the year, but it's certainly the most well-made.Score: 10/10Vice -Ever since the trailer for Vice dropped, I was immensely hyped to check it out. I'm not too well versed on went down politically during my childhood, the first time I was ever invested in the president was the 2008 election. Learning about all the fucked up shit that Dick Cheney pup petered behind the scenes of the White House really intrigued me, not to mention the amount of energy and style that the trailer brought, that won me over as well. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. This movie is so dark, depressing, and fucked up; but so intelligent and hilarious. This film is unapologetically a video essay, and it works. Sure, one of the reasons I enjoyed this film was that my biases align with Adam McKay's, but it was also just so well put together. I loved how it broke narrative, continuity, and editing structures. Characters would break the fourth wall, but in a really clever way. This film is absolutely one of my favorites of the year!Score: 9/10Bumblebee -As someone who doesn't fuck with the Transformers in the slightest, I can say that Bumblebee came in as somewhat of a surprise for me. Now I've only seen the first Transformers live-action movie and guaranteed that I'd never watch another one of those, they all just looked so over-complicated and "visual noise"-y, not to mention that they came with the horrible modern-Micheal Bay style of directing and humor. Thankfully Bumblebee didn't have any of that stuff, the visuals were clean and clear, the Transformers actually looked like Transformers! The film actually had some heart to it as well, but I feel at the expense of creating its own identity. There are so many scenes in this movie where I was like "oh that's exactly from E.T." or "oh that's exactly from The Iron Giant." I'm not just talking about some homages, but a literal cut and paste of extensive sequences from those films. The protagonists were quite enjoyable, but the villains were so bland. Overall, I guess you could say that Bumblebee is the best live-action Transformers movie, but that doesn't say too much since it's such a low bar.Score: 7/10If you have seen any of these films, let me know what you thought of them in the comments below! If you like these mini reviews, I upload these almost EVERY DAY, both old and new movies, on my Letterboxd account!
