説明 | This was my first foray into the V&A's Cast Courts since this room reopened. Everything in these rooms is a Victorian painted plaster replica of an original work, and the quality of reproduction is pretty stunning. Verrocchio's David is the only plaster cast that's in a display case, possibly to prevent his protruding sword from getting broken. (The plaster replica of Donatello's David lost its sword years ago.)Verrocchio's bronze David [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_(Verrocchio) ] was reportedly sculpted in response to Donatello's nude version ( www.flickr.com/photos/65986072@N00/4466946672/ ), to be less provocative and homoerotic. However, given David's androgynous face, akimbo arm, his sculpted leather breastplate with its floral nipple decorations, and his miniskirt, I'm not entirely certain that Verrocchio succeeded.Flash photography and glass display cases don't make comfortable partners, but I think I managed to get away with it in these shots, barring a bit of grain and fuzziness. In this shot we see that Verrocchio's David is positioned so that he seems to be contemplating his larger-than-life successor. |
