説明 | I must admit I'm suspicious of conspicuous displays like this. Especially when the near-constant movement grabs your attention when you're trying to appreciate the trees and plants of the garden itself. What is 'green' about building an unnecessarily large white-elephant of a building that serves no real purpose for the Botanic Garden? Just because you've stuck a wind turbine on it, it surely doesn't 'offset' the enormous energy used to build, maintain, heat & ventilate such a vast space, even if other green technologies have been installed - they all have a footprint. I'm not anti-wind turbine in the slightest, in fact I think most are beautiful, but this spins at a very distracting speed, quite unlike the graceful movement of its larger rural cousins. I would love it if business parks and hideous supermarket developments had these all round the car parks - but here... It's all about context!By placing this gateway building at the West Gate, it also encourages people to drive to the gardens, rather than encourage use of the East Gate which is what they should have done... Oh, except then they wouldn't have got all the yummy-mummies in their Chelsea tractors would they? And they seem to be exactly who this building is aimed at.There was a perfectly serviceable building on this site before - the former lodge house which served as a shop and plant centre. There is already a cafe next to Inverleith House. There are education spaces over at the main buildings that are now lying empty... The RBGE is not short of buildings. There used to be a nice continuity between the Botanic Garden and Inverleith Park - surely this building belongs in the urban setting of the east side of the garden? Again, it's all about context...As for the architecture, well, I do normally admire Edward Cullinan Architects, but the architecture of this building is just messy. There is simply too much going on - this spinning thing is just the (sacharine-sweet) icing on the (fatuous) cake. |
