説明 | North American B-25J Mitchell N7614C (44-31171), previously used as a movie camera ship, deteriorating in open storage at Shoreham Airport in 1975. It had been abandoned there by Capt. John Hawke and ran up £2,000 of parking fees over two years. Hawke was a larger-than-life character who organised flying scenes in movies like A Bridge Too Far, Hanover Street, Battle of Britain and 633 Squadron. At the end of 1976 Hawke reached an agreement with the Shoreham airport authorities and donated the aircraft to the Imperial War Museum. Dismantled over several weekends by the Duxford Aviation Society and moved to Duxford, it was then beautifully restored and now hangs in the roof of the American Air Museum there.Photo: Dick Gilbert, Shoreham, summer 1975. |
