説明 | Since I was taking Acocks Green, thought I'd might as well get shots of the bowling alley as well. Last time was one mobile shot. This time clear and crisp shots on my proper camera.I know it is an English bowling alley, but it looks like an old American style one from the outside. This this kind of looks like an old style American bowling alley might have, but in the UK.I've got a new book called Images of England: Birmingham Cinemas (published 2003), and it says that this building used to be the Warwick Super Cinema. It was a cinema in the 1930s. By the 1960s it was converted into a duel cinema and bowling alley, with the alley on the ground floor and the screen upstairs. Ever since it was known as the Warwick Bowl. Not sure when it was renamed Acocks Green Bowl as it is now. It was even called Acocks Green Bowl back in the 1990s when I used to go and bowl there as a kid.It used to have a colonnaded front entrance hall. The Warwick replaced an earlier silent screen cinema called the Picture Playhouse, which used to stand on the opposite corner of the Warwick Road (possibly where Wilkinsons is now). The Warwick Bowl masked up the colonades and it has a tiled entrance with front off-road parking for the bowlers cars. That old Bowling sign on the left side of the building has been there since at least the 1960s. I can see it in a photo of it in the book, showing it as it was in the '60s. |
