説明 | Flea beetles are a biological control method used for leafy spurge. There are four species of flea beetles that have been released in the Kulm Wetland Management District in North Dakota, but this species, Apthona lacertosa, is the most common one found. Adult beetles feed on the plants, but most of the real damage comes from the larva that bore and feed in the roots and root crowns. Beetles can be collected and moved to other sites if populations are high enough, and accumulated growing degree days can be used to help determine the best time frame for collection. These beetles were a pleasant surprise to find when examining a recently reseeded site on the Strahm WPA in LaMoure County. Photo Credit: Krista Lundgren/USFWS |
