ShookRemark: The structure seen here was the Superior Court House, constructed in 1903. The building no longer exists, it was demolished in 1973.The following news item appeared in the September 16, 1899, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:PORTER POINTERSThe Lake county council made an appropriation of $59,000 for the erection of a Superior court house at Hammond. The city of Hammond has provided a site for the proposed building at what is known in Hammond as "the broken corners," opposite the Central school building, at a cost of $5,000. This ends a long and spirited contest in Lake county, in favor of Hammond. If that enterprising town will only be satisfied now, all may be well, but it is feared the next move will be to grab the county seat from Crown Point.-----------The following news item appeared in the October 14, 1899, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:The injunction proceedings of citizens of Lake county to prevent the erection of a superior court house at Hammond, was decided in favor of Hammond, Thursday. The last Legislature gave the commissioners power to furnish a suitable place for the superior court, and they assumed that it meant to build a new court house. Should the decision be sustained by the supreme court, any town in the state, not a county seat, can have a court house, by special legislation.-----------The following news item appeared in the March 14, 1902, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:HAMMOND GETS A COURTHOUSE.Lake County Commissioners Decide on Building. The commissioners of Lake county held a meeting Saturday at Crown Point to consider the supreme court decision relative to a superior court building in Hammond. In order to secure the opinion of the communities interested, delegations were invited to appear before the commissioners and present their views.Messrs. Knotts, Reiter and Crumpacker spoke for the city of Hammond, while Messrs. Kopelki, Peterson and Brown were a committee from a meeting of Crown Point citizens. Mr. Kopelki gave the Hammond representation the alternative giving of $50,000 appropriation for improvements on the county courthouse to balance a $50,000 appropriation for the new building, backing this with a threat to carry the case to the United State supreme court.Hammond refused to admit the consideration asserting that if the county house needed repairs, it was a matter for the commissioners. They insisted on an adequate appropriation to perfect a representative building equal to accommodate the uses for which it is intended. The commissioners by a unanimous vote decided upon building the court house and county council will make an appropriation.-----------The following news item appeared in the August 15, 1902, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:HAMMOND'S COURT HOUSE.Will Be Handsome Structure Costing $90,000.The new court house which will soon adorn the town of Hammond will be one of the most substantial of the public structures in this state. It will be a fireproof steel and Bedford stone building, two stories high, with a large and light basement and handsome belfry tower, from which may be had a comprehensive view of the town and surrounding country. Standing upon a lot 110 by 120 feet the court house itself will measure 93 by 93 feet thus presenting an almost equilateral quadrangle. The front entrance will be a poem in architectural beauty, while just within will rise a superb staircase of white marble. The building will cost $90,000.-----------The following news item appeared in the September 19, 1902, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:Chesterton Chips. The corner stone of the new Superior court building for Lake county will be laid today (Thursday) is expected that this day will be the greatest in the history of Hammond. Seven brass bands, the governor, members of the legislature and those ex-members who helped make it possible for the court to be, are to participate in the program. Invitations have been sent to members of the Supreme court, the bar of Laporte, Lake and Porter counties, and the newspaper men to attend. Special rates have been made by all the railroads leading into Hammond and it is expected that great corwds will flock in from all parts of north-west Indiana to witness the festivities.-----------The following news item appeared in the September 19, 1902, issue of The Chesterton Tribune:Chesterton Chips. The corner-stone of Hammond's new superior court house was laid last Thursday amid much pomp and ceremony. Senator L. P. Newby, of Knightstown, delivered the oration. It was a big day in Masonry, lodges and commanderies being present from all the surrounding counties. The building will cost $100,000 and was only secured by Hammond after a legislative fight that lasted twelve years and made and unmade many men. A number of masons from Chesterton attended.Sources:The Chesterton Tribune, Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana; September 16, 1899; Volume 16, Number 23, Page 5, Column 1.
