Stiff Records founded by Jake Riviera and Dave Robinson. Personal delivery of demo tape to Stiff Records' offices in Alexander St. London results in them planning a recording session produced by Nick Lowe. Radio Sweetheart and Mystery Dance are selected as the first songs to be recorded. The second song is regarded as a demo for Dave Edmunds as Stiff initially identify Costello as a songwriter rather than recording artist. Indeed most U.K. publishing houses and several record labels had already passed on a series of home produced demo recordings. Nevertheless rehearsals take place with members Marin County band Clover then resident at Headley Grange country house and former album preparation location for Led Zeppelin and Bad Company.Some music is intended to paint a romantic scene – a candlelit dinner a walk along a moonlit beach. Quiet Nights – Diana Krall’s twelfth album – ain’t about that. Using Brazil as a musical point of reference the award–winning pianist and singer is not suggesting a night out; she means to stay in. “It’s not coy. It’s not ‘peel me a grape ’ little girl stuff. I feel this album’s very womanly – like you’re lying next to your lover in bed whispering this in their ear.” She’s not kidding. From Krall’s refreshing version of “Where or When ” to an utterly soul–stilling rendition of “You’re My Thrill “ the ten songs on Quiet Nights are disarming in their intimacy. Even those already familiar with the breathy vocals and rhythmic lilt in Krall’s music – and now there are millions – will be taken aback by just how far the music pushes unabashedly into the realm of sweet surrender. “It’s a sensual downright erotic record and it’s intended to be that way.” Krall is the first to credit the musical team she assembled – her loyal quartet ace producer Tommy LiPuma engineer Al Schmitt plus legendary arranger Claus Ogerman – for much of the seductive power on Quiet Nights. But there’s a deeper palpable sense of maturity that she brought to the recording as well. “Most of my singing and playing on the album is really just first or second takes. ‘You’re My Thrill ’ was a second take – ”Too Marvelous “ first take. Philanthropy is the effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind. It's generally agreed that the word was coined 2500 years ago in ancient Greece by the playwright Aeschylus or whoever else wrote Prometheus Bound (line 11). There the author told as a myth how the primitive creatures that were created to be human at first had no knowledge skills or culture of any kind—so they lived in caves in the dark in constant fear for their lives. Zeus the tyrannical king of the gods decided to destroy them but Prometheus a Titan whose name meant “forethought ” out of his philanthropos tropos or “humanity-loving character” gave them two empowering life-enhancing gifts: fire symbolizing all knowledge technology arts and science; and “blind hope” or optimism. The two went together—with fire humans could be optimistic; with optimism they could use fire constructively to improve the human condition. The new word φιλάνθρωπος philanthropos combined two words: φίλος philos “loving” in the sense of benefitting caring for nourishing; and ἄνθρωπος anthropos “human being” in the sense of “humankind” “humanity” or “human-ness”.[dubious – discuss] What he evidently “loved” therefore whose goal was excellence (arete)—the fullest development of body mind and spirit which is the essence of liberal education. The Platonic Academy's philosophical dictionary defined Philanthropia as: “A state of well-educated habits stemming from love of humanity. A state of being productive of benefit to humans.” Philanthropia was late simply humanitas—humane-ness. And because Prometheus’ human-empowering gifts rebelled against Zeus’ tyranny philanthropia was also associated with freedom and democracy. Both Socrates and the laws of Athens were described as “philanthropic and democratic”—a common expression the idea being that philanthropic humans are reliably capable of self-government. Putting all this together in modern terms “philanthropy” may best be defined as “private initiatives for public good focusing on quality of life.” Support Children In Need Make Wish Come True!
