説明 | Warriors - V The head # 1938 is similar to the heads carved on the West pediment of the Aphaia Temple in Aegina. The warrior is bearded and wears a Corinthian helmet. There are two small holes in the temples to attach tresses of hairs carved from separate piece of marble, and a rectangular cavity, possibly to fit a cheekpiece that was also worked separately. The surface of the beard was probably painted. – The eyes are almond-shaped, with pronounced eyelids and inner corners. The shapely mouth has sharp, angular outlines that attest to its dependence on metal models. Part of this head is now in the Munich Glyptothek. It belonged to a slightly smaller than life statue dedicated in the sanctuary of Aphaia.Source Nikolaos Kaltsas, “Sculpture in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens”Marble sculptureLate Archaic period500 – 490 BCFrom Aphaia Santuary, AeginaAthens, National Archaeological Museum – INV Nr 1938 |
