説明 | Lots of tweed and very little lycra I think the small bicycle is a Crypto Bantam. Although the wrong had been righted (the refusal to serve a woman (Lady Harberton) in rational cycling dress, high ordinaries could not be taken into the restaurant.Lots of tweed and very little lycra. A great injustice had been done in this establishment in 1899 when Lady Harberton was refused service on account of her rational cycling dress This wrong was righted during this ride. 1992 I think...The Cyclists' Touring Club, founded 20 years earlier, took up the case but lost in the courts. On this occasion the hotel did not refuse service and even provided a breakfast for the Veteran cyclists. Lady Harberton was Florence Wallace Pomeroy, (1843-1911). Wealthy and eccentric President of the Rational Dress Society from 1883, a body devoted to liberating women from "humiliating" over eleborate clothing. The Hautboy Inn was closed by 2008. It was built in 1864 in a brick neo-gothic style , part of the eccentric estate buildings of the first Earl of Lovelace of East Horsley, replacing an earlier Hautboy and Fiddle pub in the village.more about rational dress here. |
