説明 | I was watering the garden this evening and noticed what I thought was a cockroach. When I checked it closer I found that it was an antlion nymph. I took a few photographs and let it go in some soft garden soil. It had buried itself in less than 2 seconds, rear first. These are called 'antlions' because they create funnel shaped pit traps in sand and bury themselves at the base of the pit with only the end of their nippers visible. Little ground crawling animals (often ants) fall into the pit and are captured and eaten by the 'antlion' as it waits near the base of the pit.2.5cm from tip of nippers to end of abdomen. At the original size you can see its eyes and single eyelash above each eyeset and its nippers which are very similar to an ants nipper (almost like Myrmeciinae ant nippers). Update: 27 Nov 09Information from John D. Oswald, Associate Professor, Department of EntomologyTexas A&M University."Only ca. 30% of the world species of antlions actually make pits, and many of the larger species don't; they just bury themselves in sand or loose soil and catch small arthropods that wander by on the ground." |
