Kimberly WilliamsU.S. Army AfricaSoldiers, civilians and family members from U.S. Army Africa and the Vicenza Military Community came together to pay tribute to U.S. veterans, past and present, during a Veterans Day Commemoration Ceremony Nov. 12 on Caserma Ederle.“From ‘the shot heard ‘round the world’, in Lexington on April 19, 1775, to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team’s ongoing deployment to Afghanistan, our veterans – Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines – have served nobly and deserve our sincere gratitude and abiding respect,” said Maj. Gen. William B. Garrett III, U.S. Army Africa commanding general and guest speaker for the ceremony.“We stand here today as free men and women thanks to them,” he said.Following Garrett’s remarks and the reading of the 2009 Presidential Veterans Day Proclamation, a wreath ceremony was conducted.Garrett and Command Sgt. Maj. Gary Bronson were joined by Sgt. 1st Class. (ret.) Richard Hendrickson and 1st Sgt. (ret.) Mark Bostic, both from the Veterans of Foreign War Post 8862 in Vicenza, as they placed a wreath at the Fallen Warrior Memorial on Caserma Ederle. As the wreath bearers saluted the memorial, Master Sgt. (ret.) Ron Reynolds, also from the VFW, played taps.“A number of our veterans have made the ultimate sacrifice,” Garrett said. “The names affixed to our Fallen Warrior Memorial remind us of their loss. To them, our debt can never be repaid. We honor their memory, today and always.”“So today we appropriately honor all those who have put aside some of the profound jobs of life to don the uniform of the United States and defend the freedom that we too often take for granted,” he said.////U.S. Army photos by Edward N.
