説明 | Spring of 1954 in West Knox County Tennessee on the McClure property. On back of photo: "May 13, 1954".Charles Benjamin “Ben” Riddle (right) was married to Hazel Hill. Uncle Ben served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and then entered the United States Army during WWII. He took part in the first day of the invasion of Europe on D-day at Normandy beach (Omaha Beach). He was in the Battle of the Bulge, one of the few survivors of his unit, where his feet froze. Ben Riddle was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee near New Tazewell Tennessee. Ben passed away in December 1978 in Toledo, Ohio.Ben’s father was Henry Ridley “Riddley” “Riddle” and he became a widower in his first marriage; Ben was born from the second marriage to Margaret “Maggie” Jane Sturgill-Ridley. Henry Riddle was murdered in a grocery store in New Tazewell, Tennessee on February 4, 1928. He was beaten to death with a “stick of stove wood” by Herman Witmond; cause of death was a broken neck. Ben’s widowed mother Maggie Riddle remarried a man named Chester Venable and she had several more children; later she married a Miley. Some of the family stayed in New Tazewell, Tennessee, others moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, and several moved to Monroe, Michigan. A few siblings used the sir name Ridley.Henry Riddle or Ridley was born in Tennessee on March 15, 1886 and died on Feb. 4, 1928. His parents were Thomas “Tom” Ridley or Riddle and Mary Posley. Margaret “Maggie” Jane Miley was born in Kentucky on December 24, 1903 and passed away on December 1, 1953 in Knoxville, TN. Her parents were William Sturgill and Elizabeth Caudell. |
