説明 Chiltern. This small quaint town was named after the Chiltern Hills of England. It burst into life as a town with the discovery of alluvial gold along Black Dog Creek at nearby Indigo in September 1858. The fields were also a stopping point for prospective diggers and traders along the land route from the riverboat port of Wahgunyah/Corowa via Rutherglen to Beechworth. The influx of miners led to the town being proclaimed in 1862 when the first local Council was formed. By then gold mining required deep shaft mining to reach the gold bearing lodes and a number of small companies operated in the district. The town boomed in the 1860s and much of the main street townscape dates from that period. The surrounding area was good agricultural land and the town had two saw mills handling the timber that was felled to clear the land. A number of public buildings were erected in this decade including the Post Office in 1863, the Courthouse in 1865, the Athenaeum, which also served as the Council Chamber in 1866, the Star Hotel (now the Grapevine Hotel) and theatre in 1866, Dows Pharmacy in 1868, and the Council Club Hotel in 1870. Dow’s pharmacy operated from 1891 to 1909 by the father of former Australian Prime Minister John McEwen PM 1967-68. McEwen was born in Chiltern in 1900. One of the oldest structures from the early town is the former newspaper offices near the Tourist Information Centre – the Federal Standard Offices built around 1860. It contains historic printing presses and the last newspaper was issued from here in 1970. Away from the centre of the town is Lakeview House which was built in 1870 overlooking the town lake which supplied water for the town. It was occupied by the family of Ethel Richards who wrote under the name of Henry Handel Richardson for a few years (1876 to 1878) before her family moved to Queenscliff, Koroit and then Maldon all before Ethel turned 13 years of age. Henry Handel Richardson is best known for her novels entitled The Getting of Wisedom and The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. Near Lakeview House is the red and cream brick railway station which was completed in 1875 as it was on the Melbourne to Wangaratta and Wodonga railway line. When the gold mining finishing in the early 1900s the town declined and was bypassed by modern developments which is now a bonus for travellers. Today the main street of Chiltern has cafes, gift shops, antique centres and many quaint old buildings that create a charm and calmness which is to be enjoyed. The town museum is located in the former Athenaeum.
