Luckily, the building escaped the flames during the devastating fire in 1859. The original Audience Chamber was damaged by a small fire in 1665 and Christian V did not hesitate turning it into a coherent architectural tribute to the newly established absolute monarchy.By removing the attic floor the architect Lambert van Haven created a high dome for the impressive room. He had the interior decorated with marvelous stucco ornamentation and paintings visualizing the absolute monarchy. The paintings include an allegorical representation of Christian V’s motto “With Piety and Justice”, personifications of the four continents, Africa, America, Asia and Europe and portraits of the Oldenborg kings. |
