| 説明 | Underbool.The town began in 1910/11 and most early farms in the district were of 600 to 7000 acres in size with the loan to be repaid to the government over 40 years. The town progressed quickly with store, and a school and a hall being opened in 1913. By 1920 it has a butcher, bakery, police station, billiard hall, Post Office and hospital. The two storey red brick Underbool (now Commercial) Hotel was built in 1926. The Women’s’ Section of the Victorian Farmers’ Union began in Underbool in 1921 and this soon became part of the Country Party of Victoria. Their local Country Party member sat in the Victorian parliament from 1927 to 1945. The women’s group had their own club rooms built in 1924 and its survival is very rare. The group eventually became part of the National Party and the Liberal Coalition. A few years later a fine limestone and red brick quoin Methodist Church was built in the town in 1925 at a cost of over £800 with a nearby stone manse which had been built in 1923. Lutheran church services were held in the Walpeup Hall from 1923 and a parsonage was built in 1936 but no Lutheran church was ever erected here. Catholic services are still held in Underbool in their church built in the 1960s church and the Methodists (now Uniting) have united with the Anglicans for services. The Underbool cemetery dates from 1923. The old general store of Underbool was established in 1912 and the current old corner store was built in 1926 by Ebenezer Jones with a residence behind it. It was more recently Fishlock’s store. One of the local storekeepers started gathering salt from one of the nearby pink lakes in 1916 during World War One. A commercial operation by a company took over in 1922 and salt harvesting provided casual work for many during the Depression. During World War Two 20 Italian prisoners of war worked in the salt industry. ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) took control of the salt lakes in 1947. Pink lakes was declared a National Park in 1979 and all salt production ceased. |
