説明This is the Sleeping Iron Giant sculpture in Bordesley Green, not far from Small Heath and the Birmingham City FC ground of St Andrew's.It lies on a small grassy hill between Garrison Lane and Cattell Road.Bluesnose as someone has painted it's nose blue and the football club is known as the Blues! It was made by Ondre Nowakowski in 1992 from Iron, sintered, Polyester resin, on steel reinforced frame. The sculpture is situated at a busy junction in an industrial area of the city and seems regardless of the clamour all around. This sculpture was designed as one of a number of gateways to the Birmingham Heartlands. A statement produced at the time of its unveiling says that it 'reflects a history of metal industrial activity, recently fallen into decline. As he sleeps [he is] a symbol of dreams and hopes for the future.' It was unveiled by a group of local schoolchildren in conjunction with a creative writing project about its meaning. The ten times life-size head lies on its side on a specially prepared mound and presents a rusted look similar to that of the Iron:Man by Antony Gormley in Victoria Square. Both pieces deal with the city's industrial heritage using the human form as a metaphor. Published in the Birmingham Post - Post Flickr page with another one of my photos on Thurdsday 19th April 2018.
