説明 | This is the Guildhall in Worcester, which is also the home to Worcester City Council. The Guildhall has a history dating back to about 1227, where Worcester merchants would meet up. It became the centre of civic administration long after the merchant guild had disappeared. The present building was built in 1722 in the Queen Anne style (during the reign of George I). It was designed and built by Thomas White, a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren. White had many debts, and died in poverty in 1738. The city paid off the debt by 1753.The exterior of the Guildhall is in brick, dressed with stone. White supposedly carved the Queen Anne figure over the entrance. It is also decorated with figures of Charles I and II, a reminder of Worcester's long royal support. The museum entrance from the back of the Guildhall |
