| 説明 | On the way home from Año Nuevo I decided to visit the lighthouse. When I got there a sign told me to turn left, so I obeyed and turned left onto the road there next to the sign. The dirt road seemed a bit rugged but I forged ahead, stopping once or twice to gape at the scenery and be amazed by the sea of little yellow flowers.Being a flatlander, it took a while to get used to driving in California. Roads here have an unfortunate habit of going away. Or so it seems. You can be driving along when all of a sudden it looks like the pavement ends and you're about to go airborne and plummet off the edge of a cliff. Except they don't really build roads like that, not even in this driver hostile state. The road just dips at an improbably steep angle but continues like any normal road.So there I was, wondering whether my pretty little dirt road on the bluff was ever going to meander over to the lighthouse when I reached one of those I Can't Believe Its Not A Cliff dips in the road. I squinted at the road. Is it ending or not? Yes, those ruts really do go all the way to the edge. Surely they must continue on. But no, that really, really does look like a cliff. With a paved road you can be pretty sure that Caltrans didn't spend millions of dollars paving a road only to aim it off into oblivion. With a dirt road, who knows? Maybe some joker with a salvage truck drove up to the edge of the cliff a few hundred times. Or maybe I was at the top of one of those rollercoaster driveways from hell that leads to a beach house.Being a chicken, I parked the car and walked to the edge to check it out. And guess what? It really was a cliff! And no, there wasn't a pile of wrecks at the bottom.After taking a bunch of pictures, I returned to Highway 1, drove another hundred yards and found the paved road that the sign was actually pointing to. Heh, oops. Maybe some day I'll figure out this driving thing. |
