説明 | Cooley Landing is a small “ghost” settlement in the San Francisco Bay Area which is currently not accessible to the general public – pending a project (and the resources) to clean up the place and turn it into some kind of attractive public facility. It has a long and colorful history, from before the times of the Ohlone Indians, to bayside settlement by the original Americans. Eventually it was acquired and settled as “Ravenswood” in 1848 by the owner of a San Francisco bank . In 1854 there was a financial panic resulting in a run on the banks, and legend has it that the owner absconded and embezzled $300K which he buried on his property there – known as “Woodside Mansion”. He didn’t think anybody would track him down there, but a creditor did and relieved him of some of his loot at gun point, letting him abscond with the rest to either Guatemala, Australia, or Hawaii depending on which story you believe. In 1867 the property (400 acres – known as Ravenswood) was bought by Lester Cooley whose name is still associated with this area. In 1874 he became Mayor of Menlo Park and the property became a “landing” for shipping hay, alfalfa, and bricks (as well as lumber from Page’s Mill) to San Francisco. The “landing” era ended in 1910 as pieces of it were sold off by Cooley’s heirs. From 1932 to 1960 Cooley Landing was used as a dump where refuse was incinerated and eventually formed the land mass of the promontory as we see it today. In 1960 it became the Palo Alto Boat Works owned by Carl Schoof who specialized in repairing wooden boats, especially Criscrafts, and built the structure on the site that we see today, as well as a parking a wooden-hulled “Clamshell” dredge on the property which was converted to a residence but which was destroyed by fire around 2007.In 1998, the property was purchased by the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) and today a portion of the peninsula known as “Cooley’s Landing” is owned by Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District and the rest belongs to the City of East Palo Alto.Planning is now under way to have it eventually become a publicly accessible park with some kind of appropriate low-impact amenities. |
