| 説明 | The Notre Dame Cathedral is a Paris icon. I think it is one of the most magnificent buildings in the grand city. The sheer scale and detail of this building is unbelievable. From the gargoyles up top to the saints and kings that adorn the western façade and the beautiful spires that reach to the heavens, it is amazing! I am sure there are few building in the world quite like it and it is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the world. Walking up to this amazing cathedral for the first time is awe inspiring to say the least. The interior is equally impressive. However, if you really want to experience Notre Dame, you have to climb the stairs to the top. All 387 of them in a tight, winding spiral! I have come to the conclusion that none of the cathedral’s original occupants had big feet because mine would barely fit on the step! At any rate, the view was well worth the effort. To stand eye level with the gargoyles and look out over the breathtaking view of the city is surreal. Quasimoto didn’t have it so bad after all.Notre Dame means “Our Lady of Paris” and construction on the grand cathedral was started in 1163 and was not finished until 1345. It has underwent many changes throughout its lifetime and has had its share of vandals and damage during times of war ad conflict. A couple of the architectural details that stand out are the gargoyles and the headless saint that is pictured on the front of the church. The word “gargoyle” comes from the Latin word meaning gullet or drain and they were put in place to drain water from the roof which originally drained through a tube in their body and out of their mouth. The headless saint is that of St Denis, who was the first bishop of Paris and found himself at odds with the Pagan Priests and was subsequently martyred at the guillotine. Legend has it that he picked up his head and walked a short distance before he dropped dead. |
