De twee voerder moeizame discussies over Vincents voorkeur voor ijgentijdse literatuur boven de eeuwenoude Bijbel als leidraad in het leven. Met het schilderen van het 'Stilleven met bijbel' van Van Gogh dan ook duidelijk afstand van de traditionele denkbeelden van zijn vaders generatie. From 1883 until the death of his father, the village pastor, in 1885, Van Gogh lived in this vicarage in Nuenen. The two men had tense discussions of Vincent's preference for modern literature as a guide to living, rather than age-old bible stories. In the painting Still life with bible, Van Gogh clearly distances himself from teh traditional views of his father's genereation.inv.
