説明 | Henry was also a deeply religious believer of the Disciples of Christ, whereas Johanna identified at times to be a Christian Disciple herself, a Baptist, or just simply refused to say. The marriage appears to have been a difficult one, as the two spouses seem to have had a rather different idea of a happy life. Henry was a strictly pious man, described by his contemporaries as ‘a hard man to get along with’. Johanna on the other hand seems to have been eccentric, an outlier for her time. She was brought into an asylum on at least four instances, first in Christchurch, and the other three times at Seacliff in Dunedin. Her later years in particular were spent mostly in asylum care.[Supreme Court Civil Sitting, Otago Times, 29 June 1910, Page 7, Papers Past] paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ODT19100629.2.74[Supreme Court, Southland Times, 19 December 1907, Page4, Papers Past,]paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ST19071219.2.40Archives New Zealand Reference: Seacliff Mental Hospital Statutory Admission Papers DAHI 19850 D266/17/2116 / R25258208collections.archives.govt.nz/web/arena/search#/?q=25258208For more information email dunedin.archives@dia.govt.nzMaterial from Archives New Zealand |
