説明 | In early 2017, I have been following a population of this rare hoverfly in the "Parc de Woluwé", an urban landscape parc in the eastern part of the Brussels region. All observations took place 9 April and 10 May 2017. Most individuals that I found were either resting on the base of old or diseased trees, or flying low above ground around such trees. Copula and an egg-laying female were already observed on 9 April (see observations.be/waarneming/view/136540688); hence it is likely that I missed the start of the flight season by several weeks. Adult seem to have a preference for maple trees (Acer pseudoplatanus), but horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastani), elm (Ulmus sp.) and other tree species were also visited frequently. Despite the presence of numerous (presumably suitable) beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees in the parc, I never noticed any individual on a beech tree.In September 2017, the Woluwé Parc is subject to an intense sanitary tree cutting activity, which (not surprisingly) affects many of the trees occupied by C. ranunculi. It remains to be seen next year to what extent the population will be affected by the removal of a major part of its breeding habitat. |
