| 説明 | The so-called "Tower of David," part of the "Citadel of Jerusalem," part of the wall system of Jerusalem's Old City. This picture looks northward along the Western wall of the city, toward the southern face of the citadel. To the left (off the picture) runs the Hinnom valley. Only the lowest courses of stone in the wall and citadel date to the ancient Jewish city (i.e., Hasmonean or Herodian construction). The fortifications did follow this line, however, from at least the Hasmonean period (2nd-1st century BCE). Most of the actual walls visible here were built during the period of Ottoman rule, including the minnaret that stands out at the top of the citadel. Just north of the citadel lies the Jaffa Gate. |
