説明 | I love used books. They are the only source for a lot of titles I want, they are (sometimes) economical and you often find the most interestng things stuck inside. In 1966, Shadyside Church published a Centennial History - of course, long out of print. When I find a reasonably priced copy on-line, I often buy it. I like to have copies around to give to people who have a special interest in the church. My most recent find came from a bookseller in Clearwater, FL. Inside was the envelope seen here with a couple of (rather unremarkable) photos of the sanctuary at Christmas. The imprint on the envelope is interesting. Fifth & Wilkins Avenues is the address of "Sunnyledge" now a Bed & Breakfast. It was the home and office of Dr. James McClelland, an early member of the church and founder of Shadyside Hospital. The Mrs. Sutton on the envelope was one of his two daughters who lived at Sunnyledge for much of its existence. She was a painter of some importance and a faithful member of the church. There is no owner's inscription in the book, so its relationship to Mrs. Sutton is not clear. The book is being held open by an "official" Shadyside paperweight, given to new members in recent years (and it has a reproduction of a drawing I did many years ago). |
