説明 | Meet some of the birds of Bothin Marsh, in the wetlands of Richardson Bay, off Tam Valley. Phyllis and I took a walk during low tide in winter of 2016 and they were everywhere, feasting on the many treats in the muddy waters. Their graceful figures reflect the golden light of the late afternoon in the shallow marsh’s exposed underwater landscape, which looks like an entirely different planet. Bothin Marsh is an example of what the wetlands surrounding San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay looked like before they were channeled, diked, and filled. During fall and winter, migratory waterfowl thrive in the open water, and sandpipers and other shorebirds feast on the invertebrates that are found in the mudflats. What a delight it is to live in a world with such beautiful creatures, performing their daily rituals in peace, transporting us to a magical place for a moment, despite the deep changes taking place all around them. This is why protecting our environment matters more than ever.
