説明 | The prosperous Roman city of Herculaneum, on the Gulf of Naples, was already 600 years old when it was completely buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. The series of six pyroclastic surges sent choking gases at 250C down the mountainside and through the town at speeds up to 100mph. Most of the residents has already fled, although around 300 skeletons were recently discovered along what was then the beach. The speed, intensity and lack of oxygen in the flows meant that organic material including pigments, wood, food and flesh was instantly preserved and buried for the next 1800 years. Only 25% of the city is visible, the rest lies under the suburbs of modern Naples. Today it forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site together with Pompei. |
