Where we would get a subway train towards Hotel de Ville.Eglise de l'Immaculée ConceptionChurch of the Immaculate Conception94 Avenue Maréchal de Saxe, 69003 Lyon. The church Immaculate Conception is a Catholic building in the 3 th district of Lyon.Following the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception by Pius IX on December 8, 1854, the city of Lyon in 1855 gives free the diocese land to build the church dedicated to this dogma. The architect of this church is Pierre Bossan , best known for having shortly drawn the plans of Notre-Dame de Fourvière . The nave of the church was built between 1856 and 1859. A second wave of work from 1889 to 1893, permits the construction of the choir and chapels. The reason for this double campaign is to be found in the financing. Construction had been financed by the Second Empire , but the Third Republic was more reluctant to finance the construction of religious buildings. The finalization of the church is the fact patronage of wealthy parishioners. It is also Bossan who built the rectory adjoining the church. For the entire site, Bossan is assisted by William Léo (1820-1891), occasional contributor. The interior decoration and the realization of the facade are done by another student of Bossan, Charles-Marie Franchet. The entire project is estimated at 650,000 francs ; the actual cost of the work rather approach 700,000 francs. The windows of the building, twelve sets of three stained glass windows each, are made by Lucien Bégule.Shortly after the construction of the church in 1874, the parish of the Immaculate Conception is the most populous diocese , with 27,000 inhabitants. This is the main reason for the creation of another parish located southeast, that of the Blessed Sacrament.Like many other religious buildings Bossan the present outside church fortified appearance, which Bossan found inspiration during his travels in Sicily and Persia. The church is characterized among other things by its dome, so as fashionable among architects Orientalists , but quite rare in Bossan, who has used only two other times in the basilicas of Ars and Lalouvesc. The plan of the church (woolen cross building centered on an octagonal dome with lateral and ambulatory chapels) will also serve the basilica of Ars. Another characteristic "Orientalists" of the church is the use by the architect of the horseshoe arch broken , characteristic of many mosques in the Middle East.Another feature, structural one, is to have been wearing the mass vaults by groups of very thin columns, seemingly out of proportion, with the use of the arch discharge 1 . This technical innovation will later return to Fourvière.From the construction in 1859 until the restoration evoked in municipal council on September 17, 2007, the windows have not benefited from any restoration. The metallic fasteners of the canopies and the lead network are in particular in an oxidation state which puts the windows at risk. The restoration decided by the municipal council on September 17, 2007, and assumed by the City of Lyon, is estimated at 260,000 euros. The church is about 800 square meters. |
