| 説明 | The moorhens had become separated from their parent. As we watched from the bridge over the stagnant remnant of the New River that flows through Clissold Park, a crowd started to gather, mainly cyclists and families walking in the park. The yellow inflatable barrier which is presumably meant to contain the chick-weed infestation proved a massive obstacle to the tiny chicks. They swam up and down, looking for some kind of way through. At the eastern edge of the canal, some branches and debris had pushed the barrier a little lower, and the crowd were willing the chicks towards this point. Each stroke thay made in that direction was met with a collective "go on!"; each stroke away, with sighs and "no!"s. At some point some mallards came between the chicks and freedom. At another point, a Volvic bottle got in the way. Families eating ice-creams at Clissold House and picnicking in the dog-free area were starting to drift over, wondering what everybody was looking at. At last, with lots of flapping of wings and desparate clambering, the barrier was breached. The crowd broke out into loud spontaneous applause. We lingered for a while, to make sure the chicks were home and dry. Walking into Stoke Newington half an hour later, we recognised the odd person here and there from the incident; others who had been in the crowd. We saluted one another, knowingly, with secret signs. |
