説明 | May 1987 saw the introduction of electric services from Norwich to London Liverpool St. The wires had reached Ipswich some time earlier and for a time trains a change of locomotive took place there, with Class 86s being exchanged for a diesel 47 (or vice versa). This photo was taken on 13th July 1987. As a 12 year old at the time I remember this being an exciting time, with new locomotives to see, and other trains (such as electric multiple units) which we had never seen at Norwich before. The photo shows a train arriving at Norwich from London, with the locomotive (still in BR blue) leading the train. Some years later the London route went over to 'push pull' operation with the 86 permanently coupled to the train at the London end, and a Driving Brake Second Open (DBSO) at the country end. But for the first few years (?) of electric operation the 86 would uncouple from the train on arrival at Norwich, and a fresh loco would be attached at the London end ready for the journey to the capital. A small headshunt just outside the station was used to stable the locomotive which has just arrived once it was released following departure of the next service to London. We often used to ask the drivers of these locomotives if we could ride in the cab out to the headshunt and back, and on a few occasions we were allowed to do so - good memories. |
