Fielding Johnson.Prince Rupert , commanding the Royalists , stayed overnight at the vicarage in Aylestone before the battle.The wall between St Marys Church and the Newarke still stands and has loopholes knocked into it where the Parliamentarian defenders ( aka Roundheads) fired muskets through.Cavendish House, ( the ruins in Abbey Park ) was used by Charles I after the siege of Leicester in 1645. After he left, his soldiers set fire to it, gutting the building. A charred stone window frame is still visible today. |
