The bridge crosses the other river in Lyon, the River Saône.Seen from the coach, we had just left Place Bellecour (the coach had to go all the way around the square before it was back on the road heading to Vieux Lyon.Bridge of BonaparteThe bridge Bonaparte is a bridge that spans the Saône in Lyon.A first wooden bridge, the Pont de l'Archevêché (or Pont de Bois, the Counts, Bellecour or the Chanoines), was built between 1634 and 1642 by the engineer Jean Christophe Marie. The bridge is regularly victim of the floods and in 1709 five arches and four palaces are carried away. The bridge was rebuilt in 1732 to be demolished 49 years later. The work of a new bridge begins, but they are regularly interrupted.The construction really began in 1786 and ended in 1807 under the direction of the engineer Carron. The municipal council baptizes the bridge work Tilsitt . Built in Villebois stone , the bridge is made up of five arches reaching 148 m of crossing. The piers of the bridge are based on riprap coming from the excavation of the Pierre-Scize wharf. The itinerary of the "main road of Provence" is then deviated from the bridge of the Change towards the bridge Tilsitt. The bridge, too low, turns into a dam during the frequent floods of the Saône. It is therefore demolished and replaced by a higher bridge built in 1863 - 1864 .In September 1944, German forces dynamite the bridge which loses its arches and one of the piers. Too damaged, it is replaced by the current bridge, built between 1946 and 1950 . It is composed of three arches in reinforced concrete covered with stone of Hauteville.
