説明Korean War-era Piasecki HUP Retriever HelicopterThe refurbishment efforts of the HUP helicopter for the USS IOWA Museum's Korean War helicopter exhibit were overseen by Pacific Battleship VP and COO Mike Getscher. We bought our HUP from the American Helicopter Association. Number 130082 was originally in the US Navy; the HUP operated in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and required muscle and skill to pilot; with a compact single radial engine, the twin overlapping tandem rotor utility helicopter was produced during the early 1950's, remaining in service until 1962. While it’s not known if this specific helicopter was ever on the USS Iowa (BB-61) during wartime service, the battleship (which also saw action during the Korean War) commonly provided landing deck space for the rescue airships. When originally retired, this HUP was displayed at a Dutch Air Museum, then at a French Air Museum. During her time in France, the HUP was painted in French Navy colors, as they also operated that same type of helicopter. Then In 2010 the American Helicopter Association obtained this HUP, having it sandblasted and torn down at the Piasecki Helicopter Headquarters in Philadelphia for a future project. Our team was on tour at that site three years ago; talks began and Pacific Battleship Center made a fund-raising commitment to purchase and restore it, setting up a GoFundMe page.We then transported it across country from Philadelphia to California. Because we had to go through several states, file paperwork, and deal with traffic, there were some minor delays. During the journey, the truck transporting the HUP had broken down as well. Despite these setbacks, the HUP was delivered to a private hanger at the Torrance, California Airport for assembly and restoration. This Korean War-era Piasecki HUP Retriever is now displayed on these historic decks; from here, the journey to tell Battleship IOWA’s aviation story in a future exhibit begins. Many thanks to the HUP restoration team of Lyons Aircraft along with Battleship USS Iowa Museum volunteers , Bragg Crane Service, the contributors, and all who made this possible.
