説明 | TUNNEL NO. 2 AND BRIDGE NO. 19 BELOWLewiston-Grangeville LineDate: 1909Source Type: PostcardPublisher, Printer, Photographer: Lillian M. Bell, Inland Post Card Company (#18361)Postmark: NoneCollection: Steven R. ShookRemark: This postcard photograph was taken facing south looking peering into the north entrance of Tunnel No. 2 on the Camas Prairie Railroad Company's line through Lapwai Canyon. Tunnel No. 3 on this line would have been directly behind the photographer. At the right side of the image is Lapwai Creek. U.S. Highway 95 now follows this creek bed. The rail line crossed to the west side of the creek and then crossed again to the east side of the creek before entering Tunnel No. 1 (also known as Horse Shoe Tunnel). And traversing up toward the photographer. The track laid through this canyon is considered one of the major engineering feats of North American railroads. Seven tunnels are located in the canyon, including horseshoe shaped tunnels (Tunnel Nos. 1 and 5) that turn back on themselves so that trains could continue their climb or descent within the tunnel itself.Information Source:Riegger, Hal. 1986.
